Glossary X-Z

XLR Connector (or Cannon Plug) “Code X” connectors, with a Latch and a Rubber gasket. A three-pin balanced audio cable used in professional audio equipment.
XSVCD eXtended SVCD. Similar to SVCD but using higher bitrates and resolution to produce higher-quality video. Some DVD players can play XSVCD; computers with the correct software and codecs can also play this format.
XVCD eXtended VCD. Similar to VCD but using higher bitrates and resolution to produce higher-quality video. Some DVD players can play XVCD; computers with the correct software and codecs can also play this format.
XviD An open-source, ISO-compliant MPEG-4 codec.
Y
Y/C Another term for S-Video (which carries luminance [Y] and chrominance [C] on separate channels).
Yellow Book The standard for the physical format of compact discs used for information storage (CD-ROMs).
YUV A color model for video signals in which colors are specified according to their luminance (Y), their hue (U) and their saturation (V). These components can be derived from the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) colorspace in the following manner:

Y = 30% Red + 59% Green + 11% Blue

U = Red – Y

V = Blue – Y

This color model was designed to be backwards-compatible with black-and-white TV sets, so that two separate TV signals (one color, one monochrome) would not have to be broadcast.
Z
ZCLV Zone-Constant Linear Velocity. divides the a recordable disc into zones and employs progressively faster constant linear velocity writing speeds in each.
